Founding Partner Sonjui Kumar (Corporate Law) and new associate Alice Wei (Commercial Real Estate Transactions) participated in SouthEasts 2017 in Atlanta on May 10. The annual fundraising event benefits the programs for the non-profit organization, Asian Americans Advancing Justice in Atlanta (AAAJ-A). KPPB LAW is a long-time supporter of AAAJ-A.

Partner Sonjui Kumar (corporate law/governance) recently participated in a panel presentation with industry counterparts, John Lewis and Jeffrey Thompson, during The State Bar of Georgia Diversity Program’s 2017 Business Development Symposium, a CLE event. Chris Chan moderated the panelists. The panelists shared insights to help attorneys develop business and build a practice in today’s market. The program was the first of two parts. Bankruptcy Attorney Gai Lynn McCarthy volunteered with the newly launched Pro Se Assistance Project, part of the Georgia State Law Center for Clinical Education at Georgia at Georgia State University College of Law. The new center, which launched last fall, aims to fill a void in the community by offering resources to learn how to prevent bankruptcy and to help debtors navigate the bankruptcy legal process. All of us believe in and work toward a society where individuals with disabilities are assured the opportunity to participate and grow within our communities. This participation is vital to our society, and also to the health of our economy. The purpose of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is to make sure that individuals with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including any public or private area that is accessible and open to the public. These areas can also be regarded as places of public accommodations. Places of public accommodations include facilities such as hotels, gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants, shopping centers, laundromats, dry cleaners, and more. Today, this diverse group of consumers makes up a significant portion of America’s growing market for businesses, which means proper steps must be made to avoid liability for failure to comply with the ADA. Unless you have been in hiding, you will have noticed that this has been a contentious time for the country. Since Election Day, we have been bombarded with news of the transition, Cabinet nominees, protests, executive orders, travel restrictions, and most recently, litigation in the courts. Every day brings unprecedented headlines related to the election and the new administration. Although historically, companies have attempted to maintain the tried and true rule of not discussing politics at work, this year feels different. Anecdotally, through clients and peer firms, we hear that the divisive national conversation has entered the workplace. This creates a number of challenges for management. Think of it like a weather event, as an external factor that forces companies to make changes to lessen the impact on their business.
