Luis Ortiz, CLP® is a registered patent attorney and partner of KPPB LAW’s Intellectual Property Practice. He helps clients unlock business value by protecting and strategically leveraging their intellectual property through patents, trademarks, copyrights, and tailored IP counseling. With more than 30 years of experience in intellectual property law, Luis offers a comprehensive perspective on the full IP lifecycle—from development and protection to licensing and enforcement.
Luis has advised a diverse array of clients, including global corporations such as Honeywell, Xerox, IBM, Google, and Conduent; national laboratories like Los Alamos National Laboratory and Fermilab; research universities; startups; individual inventors; and federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Energy.
His practice centers on the strategic development, management, and commercialization of intellectual property portfolios. He regularly prepares and prosecutes patent and trademark applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), with technical expertise spanning electrical and electronic systems, sensors, software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, telecommunications, electromechanical devices, and mechanical innovations.
Beyond prosecution, Luis has deep experience in IP litigation, licensing negotiations, and government contracting involving technical IP. As a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP®), he is recognized for his skill in structuring and managing complex licensing arrangements. He also holds an AV® Preeminent Rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest distinction for legal ability and ethical standards as rated by his peers.
Luis is also an inventor, named on more than 100 issued U.S. patents covering innovations in wireless communications, data streaming, and electric vehicle charging—giving him a unique, firsthand perspective on the challenges faced by inventors and technology-driven businesses.
Previously, he was a co-founding partner of Ortiz & Lopez, PLLC. Luis has also served as in-house counsel at the U.S. Department of Energy, Xerox Corporation, and Nortel Networks. He practiced with Gardere & Wynne and Bickel & Brewer in Dallas, Texas.
Luis retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserve, Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps, after 30 years of honorable service. His military background informs his disciplined, mission-driven approach to solving complex legal and technical issues.
Born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Luis is passionate about helping innovators and entrepreneurs turn ideas into impact. He is based in KPPB LAW’s New Mexico office.
