Contracts Can Trap the Unwary

Date: May 28, 2019

"Contracts Can Trap the Unwary" — DiagramThe most important relationships that businesses have are established by contract, whether it is with employees, customers, suppliers or service providers. It is important to have someone in your organization read each contract fully, even the dreaded fine print and boiler plate clauses. Although we all hope that most parties we do business with will be fair with us, contracts can be and are written to be lopsided in favor of the party that presents it. Some states have introduced protections against a lot of clauses, as a matter of public policy, but protections only apply to consumer contracts and not business-to-business arrangements. KPPB LAW’s Corporate Attorney Sonjui Kumar shares her insights into contract issues in the latest issue of KHABAR Magazine. Learn about the common contract traps here. #contract-law #sonjuikumar #contract-clauses #khabar-magazine

Josh Crowfoot
Josh Crowfoot, an attorney with KPPB LAW’s commercial real estate transactions team, has been named a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation (ABF). The ABF is a global honorary society of lawyers, judges, law faculty, and legal scholars that demonstrate outstanding leadership in the practice of law and service to society. Only one percent of lawyers in the United States are admitted as Fellows. Founded in 1952, the ABF is among the nation’s leading research institutes for interdisciplinary empirical study of the law. Research by the ABF addresses critical questions at the intersection of law and society (i.e., access to justice, the function of juries in our legal system, law and health, diversity and equal justice, and legal education).

Congratulations to Josh Crowfoot for this distinction!

We Love Spending Time with Small Business Lenders!

Date: April 11, 2019

Our commercial real estate and finance attorneys Samir Patel, Alyson Markovich and Nichole Roche gathered in Asheville recently during the 2019 Southeastern Small Business Lenders Conference (SESBLC) as an event sponsor to network and have fun between educational sessions. Attorney Alyson Markovich joined other closing attorneys on a panel to talk to conference attendees about issues that take place when closing and funding SBA loans. And a fun fact: Attorney Nichole Roche took home golf honors by putting “closest to the pin.” Southeastern-Small-Business-Lenders-Conference-1 Southeastern-Small-Business-Lenders-Conference-2 Southeastern-Small-Business-Lenders-Conference-3

Cool Girls Inc. Names Sonjui L. Kumar Volunteer of the Year

Date: April 4, 2019

Sonjui Kumar Volunteer of the year

We always knew Sonjui Kumar, one of KPPB LAW's founding partners, was a cool girl. And now she's being recognized for it! Cool Girls Inc. has named Sonjui as its 2019 Volunteer of the Year.

Aside from Sonjui's corporate law practice, she has been helping middle and elementary school girls learn to code for the past five years. In 2015, Sonjui introduced the 20-week program developed by New York-based "Girls Who Code" to Cool Girls' after-school clubs in East Atlanta schools. Since then, the program has empowered more than 100 girls with technical knowledge and skills to create software programs, animate objects, or just understand how any process can be automated using easy to learn programming. Congratulations Sonjui for making a difference in the lives of young girls and for your recognition as Cool Girls Inc.'s 2019 Volunteer of the Year. If you would like more information about Cool Girls, its after school coding clubs, contact Tanya Egins at t.egins@thecoolgirls.org. If you would like to attend the Cool Girls 30th Annual "Hot Pink Party" fundraiser on April 13 in Atlanta, when Sonjui will be celebrated, click here.
