KPPB LAW welcomes Deven S. Kane to the firm’s Corporate Law practice! Deven specializes in private equity placements, corporate transactions, contracts, and guiding business owners in all aspects of managing their owner and management relationships including preparation of operating agreements, shareholder agreements, buy-sell agreements, and employment agreements. For more than two decades, he has structured multiple business transactions including mergers, commercial loans, joint ventures as well as service and licensing agreements. Deven will collaborate with Partners Sonjui L. Kumar and Raj Mahale. He is based in Chicago. Welcome Deven!

Gai Lynn McCarthy Retires from Bankruptcy Law

Bankruptcy Attorney Gai Lynn McCarthy knows a bit about shifting gears in life. After law school, she practiced law for five years in New Jersey and Georgia. Then she paused her legal career to raise her three children. When she returned to practice law in 2009, she joined KPPB LAW.
During her law career, she clerked for the Assignment Judge of the Gloucester, Salem, and Cumberland County Courts before joining a New Jersey law firm. After moving to Atlanta, she represented creditors in recovering assets, and went on to work for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) representing the FDIC in bankruptcy cases for banks taken over across the Southeast. For the past 13 years, she has been an amazing advocate for KPPB LAW clients.
Thank you, Gai Lynn, for all your legal contributions as well as for volunteering with bankruptcy clinics at Georgia State University, for engaging in bankruptcy matters at the Georgia State Bar, for mentoring the next generation of law students, for providing pro bono bankruptcy filings, for speaking in our community about bankruptcy matters --- and for being a wonderful law colleague. All of us at KPPB LAW will miss your dedication and advocacy. Wishing you wonderful new adventures as you shift gears, again --- this time, into retirement!
How the “Accredited Investor” Status Definition May Change

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has created the accreditation rule to protect investors. The hope behind the distinction, at least in the SEC’s mind, is that an accredited investor would be savvy (i.e., wealthy or financially sound) enough to withstand a significant loss if they invest in a non-profitable venture. KPPB LAW’s Private Fund and Capital Markets Practice Lead Raj Mahale explains the implications of the SEC proposed changes to the accredited investor definition.
